Violet May Barkworth - ran record shops

My uncle is her son, and yes she did have a record shop for years.

If I’m not mistaken, she started on Broad Street, then moved to the Moor.

I think The Star did a piece on her, through all her old customers , a few years ago.

Dad bought me Telstar

I remember Violet May’s shop very well.

It was run by Violet May Barkworth, and it was on Matilda Street.

I am nearly 55, and a lot of people of my generation used to go in that shop and scout around for 7-inch singles.

Years ago, my dad, who is now 80, got me Telstar by the Tornados from there. I still have all my collection of singles, including that.

Re letter from Peter King, The Star, September 5. I am also a Sheffielder born and bred and I remember Violet May’s record shop was at the top of Matilda Street near The Moor.

I also had the privilege of meeting Violet May in her home on Norfolk Park as a Sheffield City Council homecare worker before I retired in 2003.

She was a very interesting and very nice lady.

Fond memories.
