An investigation is under way after a woman in her 20s died following a Sheffield flat fire.
Shocked neighbours have spoken of the terrifying ordeal after being evacuated from their building following the fatal fire.
Emergency services were alerted to the blaze on Carwood Green, Burngreave, at 7.10am yesterday and found a top floor flat on fire.
The body of a woman in her 20s, who is yet to be named, was found inside and she could not be revived.
Police said the fire is ‘not believed to be suspicious’ and they are now working with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to investigate what happened.
Neighbour Egbert Lucko, aged 69, said: “I was already awake making a cup of tea about 7am when I heard all this banging.
“From my window I could see the fire coming out from the woman’s window.
“I heard shouting and I opened the door and a policeman was telling me to get out now. I grabbed my coat and cap and ran out, there was loads of smoke in the hallway I couldn’t believe it.
“I was taken outside I’ve never seen so many police and firefighters in one place. It’s terrible the young woman has died, really awful.”
Mr Lucko added that he wasn’t allowed back in his flat for 12 hours as forensic investigators scoured the flat and the surrounding areas.
Sami Hussain, 31, was asleep next door as the blaze took hold.
He said: “I heard banging and I ignored it at first but it got louder and a man was shouting. I couldn’t believe when I opened the door I saw a fireman with a gas mask on telling us to get out.
“There wasn’t time to take it in couldn’t really take it in. I didn’t know the woman who died but I think she had kids, it’s awful.”
