Sheffield's world champion Kell Brook stays put at 147

Kell Brook is his own man - and has decided not to move up to light middleweight and defend his IBF welterweight title instead.

In June, promoter Eddie Hearn insisted: “Kell will move to light middleweight in 2017.” And the Sheffield fighter seemed to agree after losing to Gennady Golovkin.

But Hearn has told IFL TV: I sat down with him and said: ‘I think you should move to 154, and he said, ‘My weights really good at the moment. I spoke to my nutritionist. I can make 147. I’m not vacating my belt.’ So I said to him, ‘There are plenty of things to look at 154.’

(Brook replied:) ‘I’m not vacating my belt.’ So then I said, ‘You’ve got to fight Errol Spence. That’s a tasty fight.’ “He said, ‘Good, I love a fight!’”

Hearn commented: “I think that’s great news to fight fans, because people just presume he won’t want to fight him. Let me tell you. He’s got the bit between his teeth.”

The promoter suggested Sheffield would be the venue for A Brook v Spence duel - which is great news for his heartland of fans and local boxers who will want to raise their profile on the undercard.
