Sheffield's Grosvenor House Hotel to be demolished next month

The former hotel on Charter Square is being demolished to make way for new buildings which will be part of the £480m Sheffield Retail Quarter development - including the new offices of HSBC which are due to be opened in 2019.

Leigh Bramall, deputy leader of Sheffield Council, said asbestos has now been cleared from the hotel building ahead of demolition work taking place, with attached shop units given notice to move out.

He said: “The demolition is due to start next month. We are working with the Health and Safety Executive about demolishing the building.

“It is a big old building right in the heart of the existing city centre so it is quite a piece of work.”

Coun Bramall said negotiations with HSBC are in their final stages and should the deal go through as planned, construction work shoukld start soon on the new offices.

He said the timescales for the work will be ‘tight’ to ensure the bank’s new offices are ready by the early part of 2019.

Sheffield Council is spending £60m in its attempt to bring the Retail Quarter scheme - made up of offices, shops and homes - to fruition but say it will generate an extra £300m per year for the local economy.
