The 28-year-old became the first British golfer to claim the green jacket in 20 years as he held his nerve through an incredible turn of events, mere days after welcoming his first child Zachariah James into the world.

Reigning champion Jordan Speith had a five shot lead over Willett heading into the back nine. But the 22-year-old carded a quadruple bogey seven on the 12th after twice finding the water and tumbled down the leaderboard.

Willett meanwhile picked up three birdies between 13 and 16 to cement his lead which would remain and seal him his first Major title at the 12th attempt.

He would card a five under par final round of 67 to finish on five under for the tournament. It was a flawless 18 holes for the Rotherham Golf Club member, who showed remarkable composure and confidence from tee to green and an excellent touch with the putter.

The 2016 edition of The Masters has proved to be all about holding nerves with plenty struggling. Willett certainly held his nerve over the first few holes before beginning his charge, starting with a birdie on the sixth.

Speith recovered remarkably well from his horrendous performance on 12 to threaten Willett as he sat in the clubhouse but it was not to be.

And the young American would present Willett with the green jacket, the first time a British player received the iconic prize since Sir Nick Faldo 20 years earlier.

Hackenthorpe-born Willett appeared unlikely to play in this year's Masters - his second - just a few weeks ago with wife Nicole due to give birth on the final day of the tournament.

But his son made an early appearance last week, opening the door for Willett to travel to Georgia at the 11th hour.

And it proved to be a highly profitable trip for arguably golf's fastest rising star over the last 12 months. A Ryder Cup debut is certain, the world's top ten beckons and a potential Olympic appearance seems likely.

There were more Steel City heroics at Augusta National as Matt Fitzpatrick matched Willett's final day 67 to secure a tied for seventh finish on his own second appearance at The Masters.

Four birdies in the last five holes saw the 21-year-old power to a finish and surge up the leaderboard for a result which could kickstart his 2016 after a difficult opening few months.

Worksop's Lee Westwood, a stablemate of Willett and Fitzpatrick, threatened to secure the first Major of his storied career but fell away over the final few holes.

As Speith's challenge fell off a cliff, Westwood chipped in for eagle on 15 to move one behind Willett.

But he bogeyed 16 and failed to make further inroads, finishing in the top three of a Major for the sixth time in his career without a victory.
