CHILDREN as young as four are helping to care for sick and disabled loved ones in Sheffield.

Sheffield Young Carers charity has revealed the statistic after the publication of Sheffield Fairness Commission’s report, which highlights how there are 58,000 young carers with an average age of 12.

Liz Church, managing director of Sheffield Young Carers, said: “We provide direct support to young carers between the ages of eight and 21, but some of the young people we help have been caring since they were just four or five years old.

“We must ensure young carers have the same choices and chances as other young people, so that they can achieve their full potential.”
