Sheffield Wednesday's next Championship opponents Stoke City suffer injury blow

Wide man James McClean, a summer recruit from West Bromwich Albion, is likely to be without six weeks after he broke his left arm while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.

McClean underwent surgery on Tuesday, ruling him out of the Republic's Nations League clash against Wales.

Stoke boss Gary Rowett said: "It's quite a bad break that is down toward his wrist.

"He is probably going to be out for the best part of six weeks I would imagine, which is a big blow for us.

'It's no different to any other break in that we need to make sure it all knits together and heals properly before he can come into heavy contact with players again."

Rowett is already without Tom Ince, who suffered a hamstring problem in their 3-0 home loss to Wigan Athletic.

The Potters head to Hillsborough on Saturday, September 15 after the two-week break.

Despite spending more than £25m on six players over the summer, Stoke have collected a meagre five points from six Championship matches and currently lie in 18th position.

Rowett criticised his players after their recent defeat to West Brom, blasting their "dopey play" in both boxes.

"We are clearly a good side with good individuals, but we are being a little bit dopey and it is costing us dearly at the minute," said the former Burton Albion and Derby County chief.

"Silly mistakes are impacting the games, because once again I don't think that, for as good a side as West Brom are, they carved us open with great play too many times."
