Sheffield Wednesday's defeat to QPR '˜nothing to with systems or tactics'

Sheffield Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay bemoaned his side's slow start in their 4-2 defeat at mid-table Queens Park Rangers.

The Rs raced into a three-goal lead in the opening 15 minutes of the match after quickfire goals from Paul Smyth, Jake Bidwell and Idrissa Sylla.

Forward Sylla added a fourth from the penalty spot after the break before Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu reduced the Owls’ arrears.

A frustrated Luhukay said: “The first 15 minutes we were not in the game. It was not good defending.

“We only reacted to what Queens Park Rangers did. They pressed us high and began with a lot of aggression. We didn’t defend the crosses. The first 15 minutes cost us the game.

“I think after the first 15 minutes we came back into the game. We could have scored in the first half.

“I think we were good on the ball. We had our moments in the second half.”

Luhukay insists he has no regrets over changing the Owls’ formation. Wednesday switched from a 3-5-2 system to 4-3-3, with Forestieri and Lucas Joao supporting Atdhe Nuhiu.

“The goals we conceded in the first 15 minutes was nothing to do with the formation,” said Luhukay, who has not given up hope of Barry Bannan being passed fit for the trip to Hull City this weekend. “It was nothing to do with systems or tactics.

“We let the crosses come into our box. You have to block the crosses and defend your 18-yard box well.

“We have to start games better.

“The team fought back after going 3-0 down and we had the chances in the first half to come closer to them. They kept fighting and the team gave everything.”
