Sheffield Wednesday: Why Owls boss Jos Luhukay is a happy man

Manager Jos Luhukay has declared himself happy with the progress his Owls side have made following their goalless draw at Premier-League-bound Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Luhukay has turned around Wednesday’s fortunes, leading them to five wins and two draws from their last nine Championship matches to move them up to midtable.

“I’m very happy with the progression we have made over the last two and a half months,” he said.

“We have the stability and balance back. We have made progression in the way we play.”

The Dutchman selected forwards Fernando Forestieri, Lucas Joao and Atdhe Nuhiu in his starting 11. The trio linked up well together to help the Owls stretch their unbeaten league run to three matches.

Luhukay said: “We picked a very offensive team with Fernando, Atdhe and Lucas.

“We wanted to take the initiative where possible.

“We know that these three players can make the difference. They have done that in the last three months.”

He felt Wednesday were good value for the point.

“I am satisfied after we played against the best team in the league,” said Luhukay, whose side host Norwich City in the final match of the regular league season on Sunday lunchtime. “To have a draw here is for us a very good result.

“We had a very offensive plan. We controlled the game in the first half and only gave them one chance.

“We played good football but we didn’t have the precision with the final pass. We only had problem in the first 15 minutes of the second half.”

As for Wolves chief Nuno Espirito Santo, he is adamant the home side should have picked up maximum points. Benik Afobe spurned a glorious chance in the first half before Owls goalkeeper Cameron Dawson produced a series of fine saves to keep Romain Saiss and Diogo Jota, twice, at bay.

“I think we deserved to win,” said Nuno. “We had chances and we have one more game to improve for this competition.

“We tried to win today but it was not possible, but I have nothing to say about the hard work of the boys and the attitude. We are professionals to the end.

“We have to improve the final touch because football is about being clinical.”
