Sheffield Wednesday: Why Jos Luhukay was glad to see the back of transfer window

No longer now are the local press or fans bombarding the Dutchman with questions about potential incomings or outgoings at Hillsborough. 

"I was happy when the transfer window closed," Luhukay told The Star. "It was not just the media asking me when new players were coming in. I also had a lot of people coming up to me when I was in the city asking about new players.

"Now the window is closed everyone can focus and work with each other to develop themselves."

Wednesday were busy on loan deadline day, capturing defender Michael Hector and midfielder Josh Onomah on loan from Chelsea and Tottenham respectively.

But Luhukay has reiterated his belief that the market should close before the end of July.

The former Hertha Berlin chief said: "For me, the transfer window must completely close stop on July 31.

"The players, coaches and clubs should know where they stand before the competition starts."

It was in February that English Football League clubs voted to bring forward the deadline for permanent deals to August 9. However, EFL clubs were still able to sign loan players until the end of the month.

"I have thought for many years that it needed a bigger change," said Luhukay. 'I do not understand why the transfer window has always been August 31. 

'Only in England did they bring it forward to August 9, but to me that is still not the right date. It should finish for everyone in Europe at the end of July.  

'That means when the competitions start then everyone is the same. 

"The holiday time gives you May, June and July for work on your squad and your team and maybe on new players. 

"Why is it always the situation that the competition is under way and there is speculation about players, whether they will go or stay? Or talk about new players? That makes no sense. 

"The window should stop on July 31. Now, with it being August 9 here but 31 in Europe, the feeling from players is they can do something maybe from the outside. That is not a good solution. 

"The best solution would be for the whole window to shift across Europe on July 31. The competition can then begin with every coach knowing their squad and every player focused on their own club."

Luhukay has only brought in three new players: Joey Pelupessy, Hector and Onomah, since his leftfield appointment eight months ago. Wednesday were under a transfer embargo between April and August due to breaching Profitability and Sustainability regulations. But the embargo was lifted by the EFL on August 17, allowing Luhukay to add Hector and Onomah to their ranks.
