Sheffield Wednesday: Why Dawson will stay between the sticks for Owls

Owls chief Jos Luhukay has revealed why he handed Cameron Dawson his first Championship start of the season in their comfortable victory over Reading.

Dawson, who has come through the ranks at Wednesday, was preferred to Joe Wildsmith in between the sticks.

It was the 22-year-old’s first outing since the FA Cup tie at Swansea City on February 27.

Luhukay told The Star: “I told the team in a meeting that I’m very happy with Joe. He has put in very good performances in the last few months and saved us a lot of points.

“We are very fortunate in the goalkeeping department.

“But Cammy has no experience in the Championship. He has played very well in the FA Cup games and is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential and quality.”

Luhukay has confirmed Dawson will start the Owls’ final two league fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Norwich City.

“I told the team and Cammy that he will play in the last three games so that he becomes more experienced in his young career,” said Luhukay who took Frederico Venancio (hamstring) off as a precaution in the second half. “It is the important for the future that Cammy plays in league and cup matches.”

The Dutchman was happy with his performance as Wednesday recorded a second successive clean sheet.

Luhukay said: “He is a very good young goalkeeper and did not have a lot to do.

“There was only a moment in the first half when he had the ball and spilled it but Venancio helped him to stop the shot.”

Fernando Forestieri claimed a brace with goals either side of half-time to take his tally to four goals in six matches since returning from a serious knee injury. The forward also played an integral part in George Boyd’s strike as the Owls produced one of their best performances of the campaign.

“The team had a very good inspiration and motivation to bring a good result, to play a good game and bring the support from our fans,” Luhukay added.
