The midfield dynamo has established himself as an integral member of the Owls side since moving to Hillsborough in August 2015.

Bannan, a shrewd free transfer capture from Crystal Palace, has racked up 118 Wednesday appearances.

But a question mark hangs over the Scotland international’s long-term future. His present Owls contract is due to run out next summer.

Bannan told The Star: “I know I’ve got a year left on my contract but there is plenty of time to sort it out.

“I’ve made it clear I want to finish my career here if I can. I love it here.

“I’m just focused on doing what’s right for me and doing what’s right for the club. I want to play football and stay at this club.”

The former Aston Villa trainee played a big part in Wednesday reaching back-to-back play-offs under former boss Carlos Carvalhal.

But Bannan endured a frustrating 2017/18 season, missing a large proportion of the campaign due to a groin injury.

However, Bannan ended a tough year on a positive note by returning to action in March and helping the Owls secure a 15th-placed finish.

“The club has been unbelievable for me,” said Bannan. “It was a big time in my career when I came here because I needed to play football, having been at clubs where I was in and out of the team.

“This club gave me a chance to build up my stature again and I have loved every minute of it.

“I would like to stay here but it’s not for me to decide that. It’s up to the club.”

Bannan, who has a number of Championship admirers, including Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, is expected to be involved in Saturday’s behind-closed-doors friendly with NAC Breda.

Wednesday will be aiming to maintain their 100 per cent record in pre-season this weekend. Jos Luhukay’s side have so far overcome Bury and Lincoln City.
