Sheffield Wednesday: What Carvalhal wants to see in attack from Owls

The Portuguese chief was left deeply frustrated after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

Although the Owls bossed the first half for long periods and created a number of opportunities, the hosts breached the visitors’ defence only once, through Adam Reach’s lucky 34th-minute goal.

Barnsley improved in the second period and Harvey Barnes’ stunning effort stretched Wednesday’s winless run to three matches.

“We are in a period where we probably have to create six or seven chances to score one goal,” Carvalhal told The Star. “I believe it will not be like this all the time.

“Barnsley played hard, tried to be solid and compact. They scored a goal but played against a team who created a lot of chances to win the game.

“I think we deserved much more than what we achieved. If we had been with 50 per cent of efficiency against Barnsley, we would probably be talking about a game similar to Leeds. Against Leeds, we created five chances and scored three. We created eight or 10 against Barnsley and scored just one.

“I believe if we had scored the second goal we would have won comfortably.

“I remember three times the ball was by the last line. The goalkeeper saved with his feet and there was one header off the line.

“We fight, we run, we play with a big commitment, with big hearts, we create chances and we didn’t give too many chances to the opponent to score. We must improve the efficiency and then we will win.”

Boos greeted the final whistle and the result leaves the Owls in 16th position, five points shy of the play-off positions.

“I understand the boos,” said Carvalhal, who confirmed Daniel Pudil was taken off in the second half after suffering a muscle injury. “We must win as soon as possible. It is good that we have a game on Tuesday. We will do our best to win.

“I believe the luck, which is part of the game, will one day come to us.”
