French defender Sasso was snapped up for an undisclosed fee from Portuguese outfit Braga last Friday. Sasso, who spent last season on loan at Hillsborough, making 19 appearances, has penned a one-year contract, with the option for a second.

The former Nantes trainee was an unused substitute as the Owls slipped to a 2-0 home defeat against Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United.

Carvalhal, who has confirmed club captain Glenn Loovens will resume first-team training this week following ankle surgery, said: “We are happy because Vincent understands how we play.

“In the first part of last season, he had a knee problem but in January he came back and did very well. We trust him.

“We have four centre-backs so we have enough.”

Carvalhal is optimistic his team will respond in a positive fashion to their first Hillsborough loss since March.

“At the moment we have players who are just arriving and the team are at different stages in the process,” he said.

“Some players haven’t had much time in pre-season, so they are catching up with the conditions, but this is normal.

“Some of them have started very well but at the moment the balance in the team is not right. Some players have come more late and we have injuries. With time, we will correct things and everyone will be fit and at the same level.”
