Sheffield Wednesday: Steven Fletcher an injury concern for Scotland ahead of England qualifier

The forward suffered a knee injury in Wednesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town last weekend and is currently being assessed by the Scotland medical staff.

Speaking at a media open day at Mar Hall, near Glasgow today, Scotland assistant Mark McGhee revealed Fletcher is an injury worry but is optimistic Celtic midfielder Scott Brown will be available for selection for Friday’s Group F duel.

McGhee said: “Scott had a bit of a dead leg, but I don’t think there is any concern about his fitness.

“Steven Fletcher - there is a little bit of concern about him. But, other than that, everyone else is okay to go.”

Fletcher, who has claimed three goals since joining Wednesday last July, started up front in Scotland’s 3-0 defeat against Slovakia in their previous qualifier.

Owls teammate Barry Bannan is in contention to line-up against England, who lead Group F and are three points ahead of the Scots. Bannan and Fletcher have been capped 24 and 30 times by their country respectively.

McGhee said: “Regardless of the circumstances of previous results, when this draw was made for the group, for me, that was the standout fixture. That was the fixture that I wanted to be a part of more than any other fixture in that draw.

“Were we top of the group I don’t think we’d want to go there and win any less than we do because of the circumstances in the group at the moment so it is just a fixture that looks after itself.

“I think we have a group of players who are certainly voicing - and this morning the group we trained with, the enthusiasm as usual - seemed to have the appetite to go and try do well at Wembley.”
