Sheffield Wednesday: Steven Fletcher challenged to push on after finally ending long goal drought

The one crumb of comfort Wednesday could take from their miserable trip to Nottingham Forest was Steven Fletcher's late goal.

The big Scot's left foot shot from outside the penalty area took a big deflection off defender Michael Hefele and flew past Costel Pantilimon to hand the Owls an 88th minute lifeline.

Although Forest survived a late Wednesday rally to claim maximum points, Fletcher's strike ended his 25 match goal drought for club and country.

Fletcher, a second half substitute at the City Ground, missed a big portion of last season due to a serious knee injury.

But the 31-year-old returned to full fitness in the summer and has been a first-team regular in the 2018/19 campaign, making five starts and five subsitute appearances.

"Steven came good in the game," acknowledged Owls chief Jos Luhukay. "But the team were not good in the game. Steven was positive in the moment he came in the squad.

"Fot Steven personally, as it a striker it is always important (to score). As a team, we got nothing and hopefully he can score some important goals for us."

Defeat halted Wednesday's four-match undefeated Championship streak.

Luhukay, who could be without Jordan Thorniley (calf) for Saturday's meeting at Aston Villa, said: "It is difficult to find an explanation for the performance.

"Sometimes, the team is full of surprises. It was a surprise we did not play good football with the ball. Then, you cannot win."
