Sheffield Wednesday: Star defender Tom Lees issues Owls warning

Tom Lees says promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday can ill-afford to adopt a 'gung-ho' approach when they entertain Blackburn Rovers tonight.

Carlos Carvalhal’s charges, sitting fifth in the Championship with seven matches left, take on mid-table Rovers searching for a fourth consecutive victory.

But despite their impressive run of form, Lees has warned his teammates that they may have to be patient against a Rovers side who are still smarting after their local derby defeat to Preston North End.

Lees told The Star: “Everyone is excited and we are as players and we want to do our best. But we know that we can’t be gung ho or stupid. We have got to try and do what the managers wants us to do, stick to his plan and try and go about it that way.

“We have to be wary not to get caught on the counter attack if we are on the ball. But we have dealt with that for a while now since we have been in the play-offs.

“I think that’s where it is different from last season. Teams weren’t showing us the respect that they are now.”

The defender has praised the job Carvalhal has done in turning Wednesday into promotion contenders.

“The manager and the staff have all settled in really well and where we are in the table shows the job he [Carvalhal] has done,” said Lees. “

“All I can say is that the preparation for games is fantastic. Each week we have a game plan and I don’t think we ever really play the same week to week.

“That’s probably one of his the manager’s strongest points that we are so well prepared week to week.”
