The Scotland international, fit-again following a knee injury, bagged his sixth goal of the season in added on time, slotting home a penalty to seal the Owls’ fourth Championship victory in their last five matches.

The striker said: “Things are going really well for me. It is nice to be back playing every week after having a few niggles at the start of the season. “It’s good to be playing games and scoring goals because that’s what I want to do.”

Fletcher praised Wednesday’s perseverance after the victory lifted them back into the play-off positions.

He said: “I thought it (the goal) was never going to happen! We had chances but they kept going straight at the goalkeeper.

“We know we always have to keep going because we know that we’re going to get chances. We played to the end and never gave up.

“We are creating lots of chances but we just need to start taking more of them.”

It is the second penalty Fletcher has converted in his last four matches. Ex-Owls shot-stopper Lewis Price guessed the right way but Fletcher drilled it into the bottom corner.

“I just composed myself and sort of knew where I was going to put it,” said the former Sunderland player. “I just tucked it away.

“I didn’t see much of the incident. I didn’t realise he had been sent off until I was just about to hit the penalty. I missed what happened.”
