Neil Thompson’s side are second in the rankings, trailing leaders Bolton Wanderers by two points.

But the Owls, who have won four on the bounce, have a game in hand over the Trotters. After the trip to Colchester, Wednesday entertain Burnley in their final match of the regular league season this Friday.

Thompson told The Star: “There is still a lot to play for.

“We are in a good position and we would love to win the league and get into the play-offs and do that again.

“It’s still a big ask but we have got two games left, potentially four.

Both the Owls and Bolton are in action this evening, with the Trotters travelling to Ipswich Town. Wednesday’s development squad will fancy their chances of picking up a positive result at Colchester, having gone six matches without defeat. They triumphed 2-1 in their last outing, at home to Bristol City after a first half double by Fraser Preston.

“When you go into the first team and you are used to winning games, that is a really good quality,” said Thompson.

“Players are confident so it is good to get into a winning habit.

“It’s not just about being a technical player but also having a real desire to win football matches. That’s at the heart of the development.”
