Owls defender Glenn Loovens faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday's trip to lowly Bristol City.

The captain was forced off in the first half of Tuesday's battling Hillsborough victory over Blackburn Rovers after suffering an ankle injury.

The Dutchman aggravated the problem after bravely charging down Ben Marshall's rasping shot.

Speaking at his press briefing today, Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal said: "We don't know on Glenn. He feels better today than he did yesterday.

"We will make a decision after talking to him and the medical department tomorrow."

Should Loovens be ruled out, Sasso and Michael Turner will be competing for the right to partner Championship Player of the Month nominee Tom Lees at the heart of the Owls' rearguard.

This weekend's clash is likely to come too soon for Sam Hutchinson, who is still struggling to overcome a fever.

Carvalhal said: "Sam lacks energy. Let's see soon if he will be back.

"He doesn't have a fever anymore. He is collecting energy now as he was ill with a fever for 10-12 days with a high fever so his body was weak.

"Now he is recovering and we are analysing him day by day and we expect he will be back to help the team as soon as possible as he is an important player for us."

Wednesday welcome Barry Bannan back into the fold, with the midfielder having completed his three-match suspension.
