Sheffield Wednesday have refused to comment on suggestions the club had turned down a £1.2m bid for defender Tom Lees.

Reports yesterday said Fulham were rebuffed in their bid to sign the centre half, who starred in his first season for the Owls last term.

While the Owls are keeping tight-lipped on the subject, there does appear to be substance in the speculation.

And that could be taken as a statement of intent from Dejphon Chansiri’s regime at Hillsborough and a determination to hold onto the club’s best performers, especially in the face of interest from rival Championship clubs.

Lees was one of Wednesday’s top performers last season after joining from Leeds United for a nominal fee, forming a superb partnership with Glenn Loovens who is currently mulling over the offer of a new deal.

It appears likely that goalkeeper Chris Kirkland will sign a new one-year contract at Wednesday, despite his first team options last term being limited by the strong form of Keiren Westwood.

Jose Semedo is also poised to join Kieran Lee in signing a new deal, believed to be for one year. Chris Maguire continues to consider the Owls’ offer of a new contract.

Jacques Maghoma – released by Wednesday last month – is this week set to join Birmingham City.
