Asked if he is resigned to Clare and Hirst leaving Hillsborough, Luhukay, whose side take on Norwich City in their season finale tomorrow, told The Star: “I don’t know. They have the contracts. They can stay with us.

“They can sign but it depends on them.

“It’s a decision the players must make for their own futures.”

Luhukay has not been afraid to give youth a chance, frequently handing opportunities to the next generation of talent.

“I think our academy has done fantastic work,” he said. “We have an example with Cammy [Cameron Dawson]. He did a fantastic job last Saturday. He’s 22 and came here as a young boy. So did Joe [Wildsmith].

“They have indentification with the fans. It’s very positive and that’s what we would like to do in the future.

“We want to give our young players a chance to play with us, not just train. A lot of players have trained with us in the last few months and they have come into the squad and also played.”
