With a few Portuguese players in the ranks, plus, of course, head coach Carlos Carvalhal, excitement has been building for the visit of the Primeira Liga champions, according to the Scot.

Having played a couple of comfortable pre-season friendlies, notching up wins against Alfreton and Chesterfield, Wednesday are gearing up for a tougher test.

“It will be fantastic and a great game for the Portuguese lads that are here," Wallace told swfc.co.uk. "They’ll be looking forward to it, as are the rest of the players.

"You want to play against the best and see where you are at in pre-season. They will be looking to step it up as their season gets closer but we want to put in a good performance in front of our fans, especially being back at Hillsborough.”

Wallace says pre-season has been enjoyable so far and he feels Wednesday will only get better as time goes on, with a training camp in Portugal coming up this weekend, which will include another friendly, against CD Nacional on Sunday.

He said: "It was nice to get the legs going against Alfreton and against Chesterfield we stepped up the gears a bit and hopefully as pre-season goes on we can start to find a bit of form before the season starts."
