Sheffield Wednesday: Owls Player of the Year looks to the future

It will be the Owls’ first under manager Jos Luhukay, who succeeded Carlos Carvalhal at the helm last January.

Adam Reach, voted Wednesday’s Player of the Year yesterday, told The Star: “I don’t know what to expect at the moment (from pre-season). Different managers from different cultures have their own techniques and ways of doing things.

“As long as it works, I don’t think we care what the methods are.

“Whether we are running up and down mountains all day or if we’ve got the ball out straight away, we just want the feeling at the end of July that we are ready for the fight.”

Wednesday have won five of their last eight matches to move up to mid-table. Reach, who has played in every match this term, feels the Owls have got “back to basics” over the past three months.

He said: “Apart from a couple of games, we’ve looked solid with that back five and we’ve worked from that foundation and we have looked a lot better.

“Everyone needs to come back next season and be prepared for there to be competition for every place in the starting eleven. I assume the manager is going to bring in some more players to bolster the squad.

“There will be ins and outs but the squad of 22-23 players need to know that they all need to be at 100 per cent or they are not going to be in the team. We need the best available players if we are going to get out of this league.”

Reach believes a top-six finish should be Wednesday’s minimum target next year.
