Sheffield Wednesday: Owls move on from first defeat of 2016

Wednesday's players have vowed to regroup quickly after suffering their first Championship loss of 2016.

Joe Garner’s 73rd-minute header ended the promotion-chasing Owls’ seven-match unbeaten run.

Defeat severely dented Wednesday’s hopes of finishing in the automatic promotion places and saw them fall to sixth in the standings.

It was a disappointing result and performance by Carlos Carvalhal’s troops, who were cheered on by more than 5,600 fans in Lancashire.

Next up for the Owls is a home encounter with Queens Park Rangers tomorrow night. Wednesday will fancy their chances of getting back to winning ways on home soil, having gone 15 matches undefeated at Hillsborough.

Jack Hunt tweeted: “Fans absolutely fantastic today. Sorry we couldn’t bring back any points for you. We regroup, stick together and go again Tuesday.”

Midfield playmaker Barry Bannan also paid tribute to the fans, saying: “Disappointing result today but we will be back stronger on Tuesday and got to say the fans were unbelievable and took over the ground.”

Carvalhal also praised Wednesday’s travelling fans, describing the backing his side received as “amazing”. The Portuguese head coach has urged the supporters to turn up in their numbers and cheer the team to victory against QPR.
