History, though, is not on the Owls’ side. The last team who finished in sixth position to gain promotion to the Premier League was Blackpool six years ago.

A positive result in the first leg could be crucial to Wednesday’s hopes of reaching the final at Wembley.

The Owls have the fifth best home record in the league with 13 wins, eight draws and two defeats. Only Hull City have scored more goals at home this season than Carlos Carvalhal’s men.

Their away record is more modest, however. the Owls have the eleventh best record with six wins, nine draws and seven defeats.
