Sheffield Wednesday: Owls' hard work across pitch is reaping rewards

Carlos Carvalhal says hard work all over the park is the reason why his team are finding success at both ends of the pitch.

The Owls have kept more clean sheets than they have perhaps been given credit for this season - 14 in the Championship - while the goals have been flowing too, with only Fulham and Burnley scoring more than Carvalhal’s side.

The head coach insists that goals are the most important thing but he believes that the fact that his players are fighting to regain possession is one of the reasons why things have been tight at the back.

“If we can do clean sheets, then great but I’m very happy we scored three goals (against Charlton last week),” he said.

“There are two ways to keep a clean sheet. You close your goal and defend. It is hard to do that in this competition as all the teams play compact and your options to close the goal is very hard.

“Our way is to be positive, try to create goals and do a very strong, organised reaction when we miss the ball. We want all the team to try and win the ball back and create damage to the other team.

“At the same time, you must be balanced and be ready to block the other team’s key players. We play to score goals but, at the same time, we react quickly when we lose the ball. All the time the team is balanced without the ball to block the attacks of the opponents.”
