The Portuguese head coach felt he needed to freshen things up against Hull City last week, making five alterations to his Owls team.

Full-backs Jack Hunt and Daniel Pudil were left out of the match-day squad while defenders Liam Palmer, Michael Turner and Joe Bennett all returned, despite having played little football in recent months. The trio excelled, helping Wednesday record their 11th league clean sheet.

No club in the division have made more changes to a starting XI (97) than the Owls this season, but Carvalhal insists he will continue to do whatever is necessary to keep their promotion tilt on track.

“I understand that everybody wants to see all the same players but we know the players,” he told The Star. “We work with them every single day and know who can recover and play.

“We have got options. If we have a player who is playing well and is in a better condition than someone else, we will play him.

“Maybe some people would have criticised me if we had lost at Hull but we chose well and I would have said the same if we had lost.

“All the time, I do what is best for the team and I trust 300 per cent in all the players in the squad. It’s why they are in the squad with us.”
