Sheffield Wednesday: Owls ace Kieran Lee delighted as dry spell ends

The energetic midfielder claimed his fourth goal of the season at Molineux, firing home from 10 yards after a neat lay off by Lucas Joao, who made his first appearance in nearly three months after recovering from injury.

It was the first time Lee had found the back of the net since his late winner at home to Nottingham Forest back in September. Before Wednesday’s trip to the West Midlands, Lee had gone eight matches without a goal.

He admitted: “I was due one I think. It’s been a few weeks so obviously I’m delighted with that but the win was the most important thing.”

Carlos Carvalhal’s men secured their first victory in four outings thanks to first half goals by Fernando Forestieri, who slotted home from the penalty spot after being clumsily brought down by full-back Matt Doherty, and Lee’s 29th minute effort.

“I think as a team we worked really hard,” said the former Manchester United trainee. “Obviously with them having a new manager they pressed us well.

“We battled well, we got the two goals in the second half and it kind of set a tone for us and how we would play and we’ve seen it through.

“We defended well and are happy with the points.

“We knew they would come out of traps flying, they kept their energy levels high, it was a tough game but we deserved to win.

“We were delighted to get the goals early, we had a couple more chances after that, you can’t score every chance that you have but we’ll take the two goals today and take the points and go on to build on that hopefully.”

Carvalhal was full of praise for Lee’s contribution, saying: “It was a normal finish by Kieran and something he does often. He’s a fantastic, unbelievable player and like the rest of the team he performed very well.”

Victory briefly nudged Wednesday up to sixth but they slipped to seventh their following Leeds United’s win against Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham United.

Carvalhal, who was forced to take Jack Hunt off in the second half due to a minor back injury, said: “We are better than last season and the big difference is the efficiency. We have found a way to score goals and the level of the football is very high. I hope we can keep this going for all of the season.”
