Sheffield Wednesday: Old boy O'Donnell's Owls play-off hope

Bristol City goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell is optimistic Sheffield Wednesday will still clinch a top-six place despite their Ashton Gate humbling.

O’Donnell, released by his boyhood club in 2012 after making 20 appearances for the Owls, could not hide his delight after helping the Robins boost their survival hopes.

Saturday’s 4-1 success moved Lee Johnson’s men 10 points clear of the Championship relegation zone.

O’Donnell posted on Twitter: “Massive win today for us against a very good team. We played some great stuff. Support was fantastic again!”

The 27-year-old thanked the Owls fans for the “great reception” he received and added: “Hope it’s the playoffs and I’ll be there for the home leg!”

The defeat was a setback for Wednesday in the club’s quest to clinch a play-off spot, but results went in their favour last weekend.

Seventh-placed Cardiff City failed to capitalise on their slip-up, suffering a 2-1 loss at Fulham. It means the Owls remain five points clear of the Bluebirds with five matches left. Their superior goal diffierence effectively means they are six points clear.

It looks a straight shoot-out between Wednesday and Cardiff for the final play-off position. Birmingham City will have to win their game in hand to stand any chance of making a late charge.
