The left-back, brought in on a season long-loan deal from Aston Villa 10 days ago, was an unused substitute in Wednesday’s draw away to Reading last week.

Bennett, Lewis Price, Liam Palmer, Michael Turner, Modou Sougou, Jose Semedo, Lucas Joao and Atdhe Nuhiu could all feature against the Shrews, with head coach Carlos Carvalhal likely to rotate his squad ahead of a busy start to February.Keiren Westwood, Glenn Loovens, Sam Hutchinson, Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper may be among the stars rested as Wednesday face Championship promotion rivals Burnley and Birmingham City next week.

At his press briefing yesterday, Carvalhal confirmed Joe Wildsmith (back) remains on the sidelines but is optimistic his injured stars, including Tom Lees and Marco Matias, are closing in on first-team returns.

Carvalhal, who says Wednesday have received no further bids for any members of his squad, said: “We are taking the game (Shrewsbury) very seriously like we have done in the past. We will try to win, like we do all the games, and pick the team we think is best to win the game. I will do what I must do for the benefit of the club.

“We will not put players in who have small problems or even in the squad as we don’t want to risk them.”
