The two clubs last week agreed a £700,000 fee for the midfielder, who sat out Bolton’s last two games – including the meeting with Wednesday in midweek – as negotiations continued.

Talks have now ended with Davies remaining at the Macron Stadium and Lennon left unhappy by the disruption caused to his struggling side.

“From our point of view we were told the move was called off on medical grounds – but he never had a medical,” Lennon told the Bolton News.

“We lost him for two games. It dragged on and then Sheffield Wednesday pulled out.

“We’re not very happy about it at all.”

It is understood advisors urged Wednesday not to go through with the deal for Davies, with Bolton then contacting the Football League to complain about the Owls’ conduct.

Lennon confirmed Davies will be in Bolton’s squad for the clash with Nottingham Forest today but said he will check on the 27-year-old’s state of mind before deciding on whether to start him.

Fulham are also reportedly interested in signing Davies from Bolton, who are facing crippling debts and the deadline over a £600,000 tax bill looming on Monday.
