Winger Buckley secured a season-long loan to Wednesday from Sunderland on Friday, just two days before the start of the new Championship season.

And though the move happened quickly, the 26-year-old said his decision to join Carlos Carvalhal's side was instant.

"This wasn't a move that you turn down," Buckley told The Star.

"It's a massive football club going through exciting times and I really wanted to be a part of that.

"I just want to play games because I've not had that much over the last couple of years.

"But to be able to do that at such a big club, in front of big crowd every week and hopefully challenging at the top of the Championship is too good to turn down.

"It all happened really quickly. Wednesday made an enquiry on Thursday, Sunderland told me they were interested and a deal had been agreed and I said yes straight away.

"I'm really pleased to be here. It's nice to get in before the start of the season and I'm really looking forward to it."

Buckley admits he is lacking match practice through pre-season but is confident in his fitness if called upon for Sunday's opener against Aston Villa at Hillsborough.

He said: "It's a great game to start the season with.

"Even before this move was mentioned, I'd looked at the fixtures and seen this big game on Sunday on TV and thought it would be a good one.

"There'll be plenty of people there and it's too good sides.

"You'd expect Villa to be right up there and you would Wednesday as well.

"I'm looking forward to it and hopefully I'll be involved."
