Centre-back Tom Lees has revealed it was much tougher than he anticipated recovering from his hamstring problem.

Lees made his long-awaited return to action in Saturday’s come-from-behind victory away to top-six hopefuls Birmingham City.

It was the 25-year-old’s first appearance since tearing his hamstring in the Capital One Cup loss at Stoke City at the start of December.

His slow progress culminated in Lees jetting out to Antwerp to seek the help of top physiotherapist Lieven Maesschalck, who works closely with the Belgium national team, last month.

Lees, who missed 13 fixtures in all competitions, said: “The injury wasn’t as easy to manage as I thought it would be. I wasn’t expecting any miracles against Birmingham because I’ve been out nine weeks. I probably only trained four times before the game.

“I tried to keep myself fit and I think that showed in lasting the 90 minutes. It was a big test for me coming back against Birmingham and I’m pleased we got the result.”

While the 25-year-old was disappointed with his mistake in the build-up to Birmingham’s goal, he is pleased the side have crept back into the play-off places.

“It feels fantastic to be back in the top-six,” he said. “There has been a lot of hard work to get in that position; we seemed to be winning a lot of games but not really moving up the table. We are getting our rewards now.”
