Sheffield Wednesday: McGeady left out of Owls Play-Off squad

Winger Aiden McGeady appears to have played his last match for Sheffield Wednesday after being omitted from their Championship Play-Off final squad.

The 30-year-old, on loan from Everton until the end of the campaign, played no part in the Owls’ Semi-Final triumph over Brighton and Hove Albion across two legs.

McGeady, who has scored once in his 13 Wednesday outings, has struggled to win over Wednesday’s fans since arriving on a temporary basis in February.

But despite his patchy club form, McGeady is currently training with the Republic of Ireland squad in preparation for the European Championships.

Ireland boss Martin O’Neill said: “Aiden and the manager decided for one reason or another that he wouldn’t participate in the final and that he could come with us.

“You will have to imagine what that situation might have been.

“Aiden has plenty of confidence, but to not be involved in a Play-Off final would be disappointing for him. For whatever reason between him and the manager, the manager has not picked him, so maybe his confidence will be affected somewhat.”

There was better news for Keiren Westwood, who has been included in O’Neill’s initial 35-man party for next month’s tournament in France. The goalkeeper will join up with the rest of the Republic squad after Saturday’s all-Yorkshire clash with Hull City. The Republic face Belarus in a friendly on May 31.

O’Neill’s side will lock horns with Sweden in their first match of the Euros in Paris on June 13.
