Sheffield Wednesday: Maximum regret for Owls keeper Westwood

Keiren Westwood believed Sheffield Wednesday had done enough to secure victory at Derby County and effectively seal their place in the Championship's top six with two games to go.

A superb goal from Barry Bannan gave Wednesday the lead with 68 minutes gone only for substitute Darren Bent to head in an equaliser with eight to go at the iPro Stadium.

A win would have given the Owls a six-point lead over seventh-placed Cardiff City with two games to go. Wednesday also have a far superior goal difference to the Welsh side.

But Cardiff beat Bolton Wanderers after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Derby, meaning the lead is down to four points, with the two sides set to meet at Hillsborough next weekend.

Westwood admitted he was frustrated the Owls missed out on all three points after an entertaining clash with Derby.

“It should have been maximum, I think,” he said.

“We worked that hard for so long, it was really frustrating to come away with only a point.

“But on the basis of the game, they probably deserved it.”

The Republic of Ireland international turned in an excellent performance to keep Derby at bay for so long, denying Johnny Russell and Craig Bryson with superb saves and Nick Blackman with a sliding tackle.

And he joked he should have been given Sky Sports’ man of the match over teammate Bannan as he emerged for media duties.

Westwood said: “I played well and I’m happy with my performance.

“I was happy with the rest of the lads really.

“We worked our tails off and just got done with a header at the back post.

“It was a good point, I suppose, and we go on to Cardiff next week.”
