The left-sided player, who has been one of the Owls' shining lights this term, is set to become a free agent next summer.

But a large section of Wednesday's fan-base have called on the Championship club to move quickly to tie Penney down to fresh terms following a series of impressive performances from the 20-year-old in recent weeks.

Penney, who has been the Owls books since the age of eight, said: "Don't get me wrong, I would love to sign a new deal at this club. It is a massive club. I love being here and I'm enjoying my football.

"But my sole focus is on playing football."

Penney was keen to stress he has "not really thought about" his long-term future, saying: "I have just been concentrating on my game.

"My aim is to keep working hard, keep playing and impressing people and then we will see what happens.

"All I'm focused on is the games. I'm just enjoying my football at the minute. I want to keep playing and improving myself.

Since making his Wednesday debut as a substitute in the Carabao Cup at Sunderland, Penney has made six starts and one substitute appearance in the league.

"It means a lot to come through all the younger ranks to be where I am now," he said. "Hopefully I have done my family proud and I just want to keep pushing on."

Penney is poised to line up against Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion this evening.

He said: "I have seen some of their results and the games do seem to be open.

"It should be a good game. End-to-end.

"They are a good team but I believe in the lads we have got in the dressing room and I think we can get a good result.'
