The forward, winner of the Championship player of the month award for August, is "close" to returning to action following a spell on the sidelines due to a calf injury.

But Friday's Yorkshire derby clash at Hillsborough is likely to come too soon for Roofe, who has bagged four league goals this season.

Marcelo Bielsa, the Whites head coach, said: "Roofe is close to the first team, not immediately, but he's close."

The Argentinian also gave injury updates on defender Gaetano Berardi and influential midfielder Pablo Hernandez.

"Berardi and Pablo also are close to the first team, not as close as Roofe," he said.

"[Conor] Shaughnessy it will be a little longer. [Jamie] Shackleton is already in the first team."

Leeds are currently occupy top spot in the league, despite suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City at Elland Road last weekend.

"I won't change any player," insisted Bielsa. "After the game we lost, we asked some questions together. We built our conclusions. We've had two training sessions where each player can express himself and the conclusions are positive ones. I have a lot of hope for the game on Friday."
