Fletcher's competitive Owls debut lasted merely 27 minutes at Hillsborough, with the summer signing from Sunderland forced off after a clash of heads with Villa skipper Tommy Elphick.

Pictures circulating on social media throughout the week showed the extent of the injury with a deep gash to the Scot's forehead requiring 10 stitches.

However, speak at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to Norwich City, Carvalhal revealed that Fletcher is back in training and should be available for selection.

"He is training normal," said Carvalhal. "He will have to wear some sort of protective headgear but he's training. He did a test yesterday and he felt okay. He started today with a normal session with his colleagues."

In other injury news, Glenn Loovens is closing in on a return which will boost Wednesday's defensive options.

"Glenn has recovered fantastic now," added Carvalhal. "He is working on the pitch which means he is not far away from being back. I don't want to put any pressure on him or the medical department. He's in a very good way. He has started running and moving on the pitch. Loovens has done a good recovery."

Sam Hutchinson and Tom Lees have been the central defensive pairing so far this season but there is very little cover at the back.
