Sheffield Wednesday: Kieran Lee may face another spell on the sidelines

It has emerged the Wednesday midfielder went for a scan after his comeback was cut short around the quarter of an hour mark in the development squad's 2-1 home win over Colchester United on Monday.

Lee was pencilled in to play 45 minutes of the Under-23s fixture, which the Owls edged 2-1 following an own goal by Oliver Kensdale and a Morgan Fox strike, but was replaced early on by Ciaran Brennan.

Although the full extent of Lee's injury is not yet known, it is thought the 30-year-old has been hampered by a knee issue for a couple of weeks.

It is another blow for Lee, whose last competitive appearance came at Norwich City on December 9.

A hip injury kept the 30-year-old out of action in the second half of the 2017/18 season as Wednesday finished in a disappointing 15th position.

After working closely with Wednesday's fitness experts over the summer, Lee recently returned to full training.

But now the former Oldham Athletic player, who has yet to feature under Wednesday chief Jos Luhukay, appears to have suffered a fresh setback in his bid to regain full fitness.

Luhukay is set to give an update on Lee in his pre-match press conference ahead of their Hillsborough meeting with Stoke City tomorrow morning.

Saturday's encounter with the Potters is likely to come too soon for Gary Hooper. The striker played 45 minutes against Colchester as he continues his recovery from injury.

"Gary is a quality player," said U23s boss Neil Thompson. "When the ball goes into him, he builds a platform and he showed his qualities."
