The midfielder has overcome his groin injury and is back in training, although Sunday's Championship trip to Bristol City will come too soon for him.

Manager Jos Luhukay wants the 29-year-old to top up his fitness levels during the forthcoming two-week rest from league action before he considers him for selection.

"Sam is going in a very positive direction. He is in full training," the boss said. "The next step is to be 100 per cent in training sessions. so you can then come to the team 100 per cent.

"'Training fit' isn't the same as 'game fit'."

Hutchinson hasn't played since the 2-0 Carabao Cup defeat against Wolves in August.

Josh Onomah suffered a blow to the head in last Wednesday's 2-2 draw with West Brom but should be available for the Robins clash, along with fellow midfielder Barry Bannan who has completed his one-match ban.

"Josh, he's very well," said Luhukay who skirted round the issue of whether Bannan will be given an immediate recall following an impressive team performance against the Baggies. "He is training with us so I think he is available for Sunday."

Meanwhile, Sam Winnall is closing in on his first action since cruciate knee ligament surgery in February.

Barring setbacks, the striker will be given an outing in the Owls' under-23 match next Friday at Hillsborough against Crewe Alexandra.

"He has made a very good progression," Luhukay said. "If everything goes well in the next days, he will next week play with our U-23s.

"He is back 100 per cent in the training sessions and is physical in a good direction. We'll take no risks, but if all goes well he can play.

Midfielder Almen Abdi, who has recovered from a hamstring injury, may also feature in that game.
