Sheffield Wednesday: Jos Luhukay is confident his Owls stars won't take their foot off the pedal

Ending a trouble campaign with a whimper is the last thing Jos Luhukay wants to see happen.

Which is why the Dutch chief is calling on his Owls players to put on a show at home to 19th-placed Reading today.

Wednesday’s spot in the Championship for next campaign may already be assured, but Luhukay insists none of his players will lack motivation in their remaining three fixtures.

He said: “The mentality and character in the group is fantastic, so I am not afraid my team will suddenly not be motivated for that game.

“We will play in front of over 25,000 fans so we will give a good performance, and it’s a chance in the last two games to go in a positive direction. The last two (home) games, Fulham and Preston were at a very high level. Against Preston, in the last 15 minutes, the goal from Atdhe and the free-kick from Fernando [Forestieri], everyone who loves football you came to see that.

“It was an end to a fantastic story. Atdhe Nuhiu’s goal, you don’t see that every week, and it was a great comeback (moment) for Fernando.”

Luhukay has yet to work with injured stars Kieran Lee, Gary Hooper and Steven Fletcher but expects the trio to be fit in time for the start of pre-season.

He said: “Kieran Lee has been out since September - 10 months out of football come pre-season - so we must be patient with these players.

“It’s not just four or six weeks out, they have been out for a long time. They will take time to get back to their best form.”
