Joao produced a match-winning contribution in Sunday's victory away to Bristol City, stepping up off the bench to hit a second half double.

But the speedy forward, who replaced the injured Steven Fletcher, flattered to deceive prior to his expertly taken 64th minute opener at Ashton Gate. His workrate and hold up left a lot to be desired.

Luhukay told The Star: "Lucas must make progression. We know what he can do but he must be more consistent with his performances.

"Lucas was having a difficult game after going on as substitute, not always keeping the ball but he was different after his first goal and in the end was very important to us."

Joao has not started a Championship match since his disappointing showing at Nottingham Forest last month. The Portugal international, utilised in a wide role against Forest, struggled to make an impact and was hooked after 71 minutes. His last four appearances have come as a substitute.

But following Joao's two-goal blast last weekend, Luhukay is challenging the 25-year-old to push on.

"It is always very positive when a striker scores two goals," said Luhukay. "Lucas is very important to the team.

"We were happy after his goals and hopefully he will keep progressing."

Joao, the Owls' leading marksman, was named in the EFL team of the week after his brace against the Robins.

Victory over Bristol City lifted Luhukay's men into sixth spot heading into the international break, six points behind leaders Sheffield United.

Wednesday are next in action on Friday, October 19 when they welcome Middlesbrough to Hillsborough.
