Jos Luhukay's side open their league campaign with a trip to the DW Stadium this weekend.

It promises to be a tough assignment for the Owls, with the Latics having stormed to the League One title last season.

Boss Paul Cook also guided Wigan to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, a run which included a memorable victory over Premier League champions Manchester City.

Thorniley told The Star: "Wigan have just come up so will be right at it. They will want to make a good impression.

"Wigan came up the season before and went straight back down but know what the Championship is about. They will know what they need to do this year to stay in the league and will be raring to go. We have to be ready for that."

After masterminding the Latics instant return to the second-tier, Cook signed a new four-year contract. His team have earned plenty of plaudits for their attractive style of football.

"He has done a great job," acknowledged Thorniley. "They were a good outfit in League One last year and looked very strong.

"They were miles ahead of the rest of the pack.

"We will see what happens on Saturday but I think we are more than capable of getting three points."

Ex-Everton youngster Thorniley has called on the Owls to get off to a strong start.

He said: "It is massive for confidence and to get the fans on your side.

"If you lose a couple of games at the start, there is a little bit of unease. It is the same at any club.

"But, I think if we get off to a good start, confidence will rise and we will only better."
