The Wednesday starlet started in central midfield and played 79 minutes of the European Championship qualifier. 

Strikes either side of half-time from Los Angeles FC midfielder Andre Horta and Joao Felix condemned Rob Page's side to defeat. Yuri Ribeiro was sent off Portugal after receiving a second yellow card.

The result ended Wales' slim hopes of qualifying for next summer's finals in Italy and San Marino. Page's team remain fourth in Group H, trailing leaders Romania by eight points and they are also eight adrift of second-placed Bosnia-Herzegovina, who were knocked off top after losing 2-0 to Romania.

Page said: "I was really proud of the players tonight they gave a good account of themselves, some of our performances were excellent.

"The difference is we created chances and were not clinical enough.

"There are aspects with the performance we are pleased with, 2-0 absolutely feels like a harsh scoreline for us.

"But I could not be more proud of my group of players."

Meanwhile, Josh Onomah was introduced as a late substitute in England Under-21s hard-fought victory at Latvia. The midfielder, signed on loan from Tottenham at the end of August, replaced Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

England came-from-behind to pick up maximum points after goals from Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount.

Elsewhere, Michael Hector put in an assured performance in Jamaica's comprehensive victory over Cayman Islands. The Reggae Boyz opened their qualifying phase of the CONCACAF Nations League in style, recording a resounding 4-0 win.

Defender Hector, who along with Onomah is set to join in training with the rest of the Wednesday squad tomorrow, is confident Jamaica can qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

The 26-year-old told The Gleaner: "I think we are in a good place for the next World Cup qualifiers. We can add a few players here and there, but we are in a good place right now.

"The local players from Jamaica are training very well and it is good to see that they are testing themselves, because there are more personalities, and, for me, the standard is getting better.

"We should be qualifying for World Cups because we have been to two Gold Cup finals and we are not a bad team, but we just need to put the consistency together and do it in the World Cup qualifiers, because we have done it the Gold Cup."
