Sheffield Wednesday: Injury update as Marco Matias, Daniel Pudil and Ash Baker struggle for fitness

Attacker Marco Matias missed Friday night's 1-1 home draw with second-tier pace-setters Leeds United because of a hamstring injury while centre-half Daniel Pudil was ruled out by a broken nose.

Ash Baker, who was operating as a right midfielder, limped off with a leg complaint in the second half against Marcelo Bielsa's side.

Manager Jos Luhukay hopes all three will be available for Wednesday's Hillsborough clash with West Brom but won't take any chances by rushing them back.

"Marco and Daniel were not 100 per cent in our last training session on Thursday so that's why they couldn't play against Leeds," he said.

"Maybe we have a hope for Wednesday. We will see how they are over the next few days.

"We must wait on Ash. I'm not 100 per cent sure if he will be an option for Wednesday."

Matias and Pudil had been two of the heroes of the 2-1 triumph at Aston Villa in the game before Friday's encounter. Their places against Leeds went to Fernando Forestieri, available after a three-match ban, and Jordan Thorniley who had recovered from a calf issue.

"Marco had a problem on his hamstring," Luhukay said. "He didn't have a good feeling so the medical team said the risk was too high. We must hope it is possible for him to come back to the team in the next few days. Hopefully he can play. 

"Daniel has broken his nose. He did it in the Villa game. It is very difficult to make clearances when you have a head injury. For Daniel, it was more protection for himself. We know he is a fighter. Maybe he will be available for the next game or next Sunday (at Bristol City).

"We must speak with our medical team about both of them and see if it is a risk or not. The risk was too high against Leeds. If Marco or Daniel had played, their time away could have become longer."

The Owls took the lead just before half-time in the Yorkshire derby as Adam Reach produced an amazing 30-yard dipping volley that went in off the woodwork, but Leeds hit back to dominate after the break and equalised through Mateusz Klich.

"We must recover very fast for a very strong opponent on Wednesday," Luhukay added.
