But speaking after their goalless draw with the Owls last weekend, Nuno said he realised his side had promotion potential after the previous meeting between the two sides. “Against Sheffield Wednesday away was important because we had to find solutions,” he said. “All season we’ve improved the team in certain moments.

“That moment we finished with a back five of six-foot players, then the next game we played at home with three fast players.”

In front of a large crowd at Molineux, Nuno and his players lifted the Championship trophy on Saturday evening.

“It’s a fantastic day,” he said. “When you have something material that you can hold, that’s when you feel you are Champions.

“It’s well deserved. I think we were the better team in the competition and the most consistent. It’s a day we’ll always remember.

“The support throughout the season, at Molineux and all the stadiums in the country, has been fantastic, especially today.

“After the game was finished they waited for us to celebrate and it’ll stay in our memory.”
