Sheffield Wednesday: How freak incident took the shine off Jack Hunt's jewels

It was a freak injury which left Owls defender Jack Hunt writhing in pain.

In the second half of Saturday’s battling win at Hull City, the wing-back rushed out to block a Kamil Grosicki cross only for the ball to hit him in the groin area.

Hunt tried in vain to play on after receiving treatment for several minutes.

But he had to be taken off just after the hour mark and be replaced by Liam Palmer.

Luckily, the 27-year-old was able to laugh about the incident post-match as Wednesday claimed a third victory in their last four matches away from Hillsborough.

“It is something I hope never happens to me again,” Hunt told The Star. “I went to close to him down and made a good block but the ball picked up a little bit of speed and hit me in the sore area.

“I had never felt pain like that in my life. I tried my best to carry on but I really couldn’t. It’s a very laughable injury but it is something you have to be very, very careful with.”

It is fair to say Hunt really took one for the team.

Commenting on Hunt’s injury, manager Jos Luhukay laughed: “I can not explain it very well but it was in a dangerous area.

“I spoke to him after and I said in the evening his wife must be careful ... it’s not happening tonight! We’ll check on him over the next few days.”

Hunt, who has played 33 times this season, hopes to quickly shake off the injury.

He said: “I have been really frustrated this year because it is the first time in my career where I’ve had to come off in quite a lot in games.

“I thrive off playing 90 minutes so that’s the disappointing thing.”

Hunt provided the assist for Jordan Rhodes’ 18th-minute winner, whipping in a delightful cross from the right flank.

“I got a little bit of joy at times in that first half,” said Hunt.

“Credit to Hull, I think they are a really, really good team. Their wingers on both sides were really tricky so we had to be a little more defensive.

“Everyone knew their job and I thought it worked very well in this game.”
