The Scotland international has already picked up four yellow cards in eight matches this season.

Bannan, who is expected to line-up in midfield when Wednesday go to Nottingham Forest tomorrow night, is just a booking away from triggering an automatic one-match suspension.

The cut-off point for five cautions is November 30, with the Owls scheduled to play 12 Championship fixtures between now and then.

Jos Luhukay, the Wednesday boss, told The Star: "I spoke with Barry yesterday. We hope the fifth booking is not coming. It is every game possible, of course.

"But we must not look at the negative side. We hope that Barry plays a very good game for us and doesn't pick up another yellow card and can play the next game.

"There is a risk Barry could pick up a yellow card in every game but we try to think positive."

Bannan has been the Owls' standout performer in the 2018/19 campaign, producing a series of impressive performances in the heart of their midfield. He has also weighed in with two goals, including a superb free-kick in Saturday's draw with Stoke City.

"Barry is a very experienced player and he won't be thinking in the Forest game that he must not commit one against one," said Luhukay. "You never know what can happen in a game and what situation you can get in as a player but Barry will not be thinking about that tomorrow."
