Gary Hooper has moved a step closer to completing a permanent move to Hillsborough after Sheffield Wednesday agreed a fee with Norwich City last night.

Hooper returned to Carrow Road following the expiry of his loan deal on Sunday and has trained with the Premier League strugglers over the last couple of days.

But the Owls are understood to have reached an agreement with Norwich over a fee, believed to be around £3m, for the striker.

Should Hooper agree personal terms with the Championship outfit, his return could be confirmed later today.

The Star understands Carlos Carvalhal’s side, who currently occupy the final play-off spot, are eager to finalise the transfer before Saturday’s trip to Reading.

Hooper, formerly of Scunthorpe United and Celtic, caught the eye during his temporary stay, hitting six goals in 13 Owls appearances. The 27-year-old was the matchwinner in their home victories over Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United last week.

After his double against Leeds, Hooper said: “I want to stay, I like it here. It’s a good squad and we’re winning games. I’m scoring goals and playing games. I’m happy here and we’ve just got to see what happens now.”

Boss Carlos Carvalhal said he was optimistic Hooper would rejoin them but pointed out the negotiations process was not part of his remit.
